How to Experience God Fully (without missing anything)

I was looking for a formula for getting a FULL EXPERIENCE of GOD today.

Some people say there are no formulas, but I found it in the Bible (go figure):

Here it is, but first be warned – this is really complex stuff, and you may not fully understand it until you go through four years of bible college, followed by an M.Div in Theology.

Now that you’ve been properly warned, and without further ado, here is the formula:

  1. Start with Faith in Christ, then
  2. … Be Rooted in LOVE
  3. … Be firmly established in LOVE
  4. … Comprehend God’s LOVE
  5. … Know the Messiah’s LOVE, (the knowing that surpasses head-knowledge), then you will be
  6. FILLED with ALL the FULLNESS of GOD.

Okay – take a deep breath.  I know that was a lot of doctrine to take in all at once!

Seriously, I get the feeling that knowing, being, and showing love is the key to my experience as a Christian.

I could be wrong, but I deduce from this, that if I’m not showing love, it’s because I’m not being love, and if I’m not being love, it’s because I’m not knowing The Love of God.

Try this out in a few translations
Ephesians 3:17-19

HCSB – and that the Messiah may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love, and to know the Messiah’s love that surpasses knowledge, so you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

CEB – I ask that Christ will live in your hearts through faith. As a result of having strong roots in love, I ask that you’ll have the power to grasp love’s width and length, height and depth, together with all believers.  I ask that you’ll know the love of Christ that is beyond knowledge so that you will be filled entirely with the fullness of God.

NASB – so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

So what do you think it means to comprehend with all the saints, or to grasp together with all the believers – to know the love which surpasses knowledge?  Does this mean that God wants us to know this in the same way that all believers know this? Or, that He wants us to learn it just like He wants everyone in the church to learn it? Or does it perhaps mean that we grasp it when we practice it when we’re together with all the believers?

Is there anything that’s blocking you, dear Christian? Is there a reason you aren’t experiencing the fullness of God?  Do others experience you as a loving Christian?

Could it be that your block has to do with knowing the love of God. The apostle John says that we love, because He first loved us (1 Jn 3:10, and 3:19).  If that’s the problem, what are you depending on – what is the basis for your reception, in faith, of God’s love?

Hurry Up and Stop!

I love this play on words in Hebrews 4:11, where it says, “be diligent to enter that rest”.

The word for ‘diligent’ means ‘hurry, hasten’.
The word for ‘rest’ is ‘to stop’.

So in effect it says,

“hurry up and stop”.

THIS IS MY KIND OF HUMOR.

In context the writer is saying, since there’s some scary stuff under the old covenant, God wants works-based people to hurry up and stop working for their righteousness with God. Trust in the finished work of Jesus!
And this ain’t no “baby-steps-to-Jesus-I-took-30-years-ago”…

This is present day, moment by moment, right-now dependence on Christ for our access to the Father.
